Yamaji Art in partnership with Mundaring Art Centre were pleased with the turnout on opening night at the recent exhibition of the “Gurawu” Collection.
Opened with a Welcome to Country by Wadjuk Elder, Professor Simon Forrest, the night seen an impressive turn out of over 100 people who admired the bright colours of the impressionistic approach to the Wildflower cultural stories from the Midwest of Western.
The event bought together artworks from Yamaji artists – Margaret Whitehurst, Barbara Merritt Andrea Green Ugle, Charmaine Green, Kevin Merritt, Jennifer Green, Sonya Edney and Sherryl Green. The cultural lines across the Midwest carry traditional and contemporary connections to knowledge , customs and narratives that have been handed down for many generations and will continue to do so for many more.
Our Elders and families passed down the stories connected to the land and sky to tell us when bush foods were available , weather patterns and the abundance of water . In the more contemporary times the importance of the wildflower season and family time together brings new stories to be handed down (C. Green 2017).
This exhibition incorporated the new techniques and styles using an impressionist style to tell our stories and to share with everyone.
