Yamaji Art was successful in their application to the Minderoo Foundation’s Indigenous Creative Fellowship. This fellowship seen Yamaji Art artist’s provide a creative response to Sir John Forrest’s expedition from Geraldton to Adelaide in 1874. The trip across state led the explores into uncharted territory eventually leading them into difficulties locating water for the explores and accompanying horses.
The group relied on the knowledge of local Traditional Owners in order to survive the journey. The art centre worked with several artist out on country to reignite their cultural knowledge surrounding traditional water sourcing and how this knowledge was passed on to Sr John Forrest.
There were 12 artist involved in the project who were able to share stories of one particular location called Noondamarra Pool near Mullewa, Western Australia
This knowledge will then be used to create an installation to be exhibited along with several other art centres in WA who are also providing their responses to the expedition.
All of the works will then be exhibited in the State Library of Western Australia in May 2019 and then the Museum of Western Australia – Geraldton in July 2019.
