Donovan was born at Billabong Station out of Mullewa in 1974. He grew up living in Wiluna, attending school at the Wiluna Remote Community School, and High School at Meekatharra.
Donovon works are usually about bush tucker, in particular Honey Ants and Bardies (Witchetty Grubs), Goanna, family and seeds.
